Holidays to Washington

Visit the nation’s capital of Washington DC for the true American experience. Named after the first president of the US, Washington is home to some of the country’s most important political and historical landmarks.

SHOPPING – For a variety of high end boutiques and flea markets, head to Georgetown, one of the oldest parts of the city. Downtown DC has a wide selection of traditional stores with well known high street brands and designer goods. U Street and 14th provides a mix of cool furniture stores, clothing shops and funky boutiques!

ACTIVITIES – If you like to get lost in sea of history, this city is for you. Get started with a visit to the Lincoln Memorial, the Jefferson Memorial and the civil rights icon Martin Luther King Memorial. For lighter relief, head on a dinner or lunch cruise for a leisurely view of the city from the water. Rock Creek is worth a visit to get away from the city 48 miles of trails for peaceful walks, bike rides and picnics. America’s only public spy museum is located in Washington, where you can go undercover as a superspy!

DINING OUT/NIGHTLIFE – Penn Quarter & Chinatown are the main entertainment centres where games, sport and concerts take place. There are an abundances of places to eat, with no less than 5 Michelin starred restaurants! For a treat try “Minibar” with its 2 stars. For a vibrant and busy bar district, visit Adams Morgan, or for great views check out POV Rooftop Lounge & terrace. Marvin, provides rooftop DJ’S playing classics with great soul food.

Grainne from the Cassidy Team enjoyed an incredible trip to Washington this year! Below are her highlights:

"My trip started with a tour on the Old Town Trolley, which was a great way to see all the major sights in Washington. The tour starts and ends at Union Station, so it's easy to walk to Capitol Hill and down the National Mall to see the Washington Monument and Lincoln Memorial from here. After this, I went to the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History, which features 18 different museums and attractions that are free to the public. This is a huge attraction for everyone especially families, and includes Washington Zoo!

It was amazing to visit the Capitol Hill Visitors Centre the next day, and was easy to book a tour for around €30. One of my favourite parts of the trip was heading to a nearby Old Town called Georgetown, which was beautiful with cobbled streets and delicious bakeries and restaurants. It's a great experience to do a local 'Tastes of Georgetown' tour, which allows you to sample the best food on offer! Finally, if you're into shopping, don't miss a stop to Leeburg Premium Outlets, which is on the outskirts of the city and close to the airport."

Grainne's top tip: "Booking Premium Economy on my flight over to Washington with United Airlines added a little luxury to my journey over! For just €150 - €200 extra each way, the Premium Economy seats were extra comfortable and had generous leg room and great inflight entertainment."
