Shakespeare's Houses

Discover Shakespeare’s Family Homes

Re-live the history of one of our greatest playwrights at the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust in Stratford Upon-Avon, where you can visit a number of Shakespeare’s houses!

William Shakespeare is without a doubt one of the greatest playwrights of all time, and now you can visit the places where he was born, lived and worked!

You’ll be taken back in time to Elizabethan England as you step inside the birthplace of Shakespeare, as well as homes and important places that were significant in the life of The Bard.

Tickets allow you to visit 1, 4 or 5 of the houses at the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust (depending on season).

Guides are also on-hand in each house to tell you about the house and answer any questions you may have.

Shakespeare’s Five Houses:

Shakespeare’s Birthplace

Find out how Shakespeare’s family earned their living and unravel the details of his fascinating life in the house where he was born and lived his early life.

Anne Hathaway’s Cottage

Explore the beautiful, award-winning gardens and the magical Willow Cabin where romance first blossomed between Shakespeare and his wife, Anne Hathaway.

Hall’s Croft

The home of William’s daughter Susanna and her husband Dr John Hall. This elegant house also has a tranquil garden filled with lush herbaceous borders and fragrant roses.

Mary Arden's Farm

This timber-framed farmhouse was known until recently as Mary Arden's House. The name is due to the belief that it belonged to Robert Arden and may have been the home of his daughter Mary, who went on to marry John Shakespeare. Please Note: Mary Arden's Farm is generally closed between November-mid March each year.

New Place

New Place, where Shakespeare died in 1616, was destroyed in the 1700s. However, a memorial garden was commissioned and now stands here in its place! A mulberry tree, believed to be taken from a cutting planted by Shakespeare himself, stills flourishes here to this day.

Shakespeare ALOUD! As you explore Shakespeare's houses, you might just encounter some of his characters brought to life by actors - including the romantic first meeting of Romeo and Juilet! Shakespeare ALOUD is available in Anne Hathaway’s Cottage, Shakespeare’s Birthplace and Hall’s Croft.
