History has been kind to the town the Romans called Eboracum, which until the Reformation was the most important city in northern England. Visit the city walls, some sections of which date from Roman times, and the Micklegate. Amble along The Shambles, a street that seems like the set of a Shakespeare play or explore the castle area, which also has a museum located in a former prison. Be dazzled by the jewel in York’s crown, the Minster. This magnificent masterpiece of Gothic architecture is renowned for its elaborate exterior, imposing nave and stunning stained glass windows such as one popularly known as the Heart of Yorkshire.

Continue the journey back in time at the Jorvik Viking Centre, where the Old Norse city has been accurately reconstructed – even down to the smells from the time!
