Things to do in Santorini
Santorini offers tons of things to see and do. Your Santorini holidays won’t be short of activities – start by exploring the picturesque caldera towns. If you’re not already staying there, take the time to visit Fira, Imerovigli, Firastefani and Oia – walking through these gorgeous mountainside towns is like stepping into a painting. Santorini is like three islands in one: the stunning clifftop views of the caldera, the side with the beaches, and the rugged landscapes across the heart of the island. It’s great for outdoor activities like hiking and walking. Step into the ancient past with a visit to the island’s well-preserved historic sites like Ancient Akrotiri. Like Pompeii, this age-old town was preserved in ash after a volcanic eruption. For beautiful landscapes, see Amoudi Bay.
Dining Out in Santorini
For a taste of authentic Greek cuisine, there’s nowhere better than Santorini. Walk the streets of the main tourist towns like Oia and Fira and you’ll find plenty of welcoming restaurants that cater to visitors and serve up delicious food made from fresh local ingredients. You have to try some of the local specialties like souvlaki, moussaka and pastitsio, as well as the keftedes that many restaurants pride themselves on. Santorini cuisine is a blend of influences, and like most islands seafood is a big part of it. You’ll find fresh, delicious seafood almost everywhere. There is also a wide range of international cuisine with options from across Europe, the East and familiar favourites.
Beaches in Santorini
Refreshing waters and striking landscapes make Santorini’s beaches truly special. They come in many colours and each one is unique – some are soft and sandy, some are rocky and set into towering cliffs. The island boasts plenty of beachside resorts with beach chairs great for lounging around and places to relax and eat nearby, perfect for an afternoon or a day of seaside relaxation. Many beaches are concentrated around the east and southeast of the island, away from the caldera towns. Kamari Beach feels tourist-friendly and busy, Perissa and Perivolos have more of a party-scene, but get more relaxed as you go further south along Perivolos Beach. Red Beach earns its name through stirking ochre-pebbled scenery. Santorini boasts six Blue Flag beaches accredited for being safe and clean: Georgios, Vlychada, Perivolos, Perissa and both of the Kamari beaches.
Families
Santorini is probably most popular with couples and groups thanks to its romantic landscapes – but it’s also a family-friendly destination that offers a different experience than the usual fly-and-flop resort. For a fun way to take in the views, go for a donkey ride around the island – or a boat tour that brings you around the see the amazing volcano, one of the island’s top sights. Hit up one of the fantastic beaches, catch a movie at the Kamari Open Air Cinema, explore historic towns like Pyrgos, Emporio and Fira. Go swimming, hiking or just enjoy the outdoors.
