Built on a man made island in the middle of the St Lawrence River, the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve first hosted the Grand Prix in 1978, and is one of the drivers’ favourite tracks. The track is quite stop start, characterised by twisty sections and tight hairpins requiring heavy breaking. One of the most famous parts is the “Wall of Champions” right at the end of the lap, where Three Formula One Champions Damon Hill, Michael Schumacher and Jacques Villeneuve along with FIA GT champion Ricardo Zonta lost their races.
Montreal is just 5km away, and really embraces the Grand Prix weekend, hosting street parties, driver appearances and F1 exhibitions. One of F1’s most laid back venues, there is plenty to see, with good shopping, lively nightlife and lots of opportunities to enjoy Montreal’s artistic culture.
With many big hotel chains and budget alternatives in the city of Montreal, it’s best to stay in the city. Wherever you’re travelling from, it’s easy to get to the track using the city’s metro system.
