Cassidy Travel 1985

Over 40 Years of Travel

  • Founding

Cassidy Travel is established in Dublin as a family-run travel agency by co-founders John Cassidy and John Spollen. The partners open their first travel shop (on Lower Liffey Street in Dublin) and begin building what will become one of Ireland’s leading travel companies.

    1985

  • Early Expansion

The company grows its customer base and branch network in Dublin. During this period, Cassidy Travel launches Classic Resorts, a sister brand specializing in luxury long-haul holidays and honeymoons, which over the next 25+ years becomes a premier luxury tour operator in Ireland. (Today Classic Resorts is a well-known luxury travel division of Cassidy Travel.)

    Mid-1990s

  • 30th Anniversary

Cassidy Travel celebrates 30 years in business. By this time it has expanded to eight travel shops around Dublin with about 90 staff. The company marks the occasion with a special event for staff and loyal customers aboard the MSC Splendida cruise ship, reflecting on decades of growth through economic ups and downs.

    2015

  • Industry Recognition

Cassidy Travel is named “Travel Agent of the Year” (2016) by the Irish Travel Agents Association (ITAA), recognizing it as Ireland’s top travel agency. This award highlights Cassidy Travel’s strong reputation for customer service and value early in its fourth decade of operations.

    January 2016

  • Leadership Role

Co-founder John Spollen is elected President of the Irish Travel Agents Association. His appointment as ITAA President underscores Cassidy Travel’s influence and leadership within Ireland’s travel industry.

    March 2018

  • Travel Agency of the Year

Cassidy Travel wins the All-Ireland Travel Agency of the Year award at the Irish Travel Trade News Awards 2018. By this point the company has nine Dublin branches and has invested in both product range and technology. Awards judges commend Cassidy Travel’s innovative customer service – including in-store self-service iPads, a children’s “Little Explorers” holiday writing program, fun suitcase mascots, and a massive social media presence (175,000+ Facebook followers). Cassidy’s luxury division Classic Resorts also wins “Best Luxury Tour Operator” in 2018, and the agency is voted “Best Travel Agent” in the 2018 Irish Independent Reader Travel Awards – a banner year for accolades.

  • Continued Growth

Cassidy Travel kicks off 2019 by winning “Travel Agency of the Year 2019” at the Irish Travel Industry Awards (ITAA). John Spollen notes this comes on the heels of a year of strong growth. At this time Cassidy Travel operates nine Travel shops around Dublin with over 100 travel experts on staff, and it helps more than 100,000 holidaymakers per year. 2019 also sees Cassidy Travel (as an independent agency) win the Travel Weekly UK Agent Achievement Award for Best Travel Agency in Ireland, reflecting peer and industry supplier recognition of its excellence.

    January 2019

  • Public Vote & Diversification

Cassidy Travel is voted “Ireland’s Favourite Travel Agent/Tour Operator” in the Irish Independent Reader Travel Awards 2020. Readers praise the agency as “trustworthy” and lauded for “great deals” and personal service. By early 2020, Cassidy Travel has nine retail outlets across Dublin and over 100 travel experts. It has also diversified its offerings with specialist divisions like Cassidy Golf (focused on golf and sports travel) and the Classic Resorts luxury brand, catering to a wide range of holiday types. At the awards ceremony, management announces plans to open a tenth Dublin branch in St. Stephen’s Green Shopping Centre the following month.

    January 2020

  • 10th Branch

Cassidy Travel opens its tenth Travel shop on the ground floor of Stephen’s Green Shopping Centre in Dublin. This expansion solidifies Cassidy Travel’s status as Ireland’s largest travel agent, with ten storefront locations across the city (including shops in Liffey Street, Ilac Centre, Blanchardstown, Tallaght, Swords, Dundrum, Liffey Valley, Donaghmede, and more) alongside a comprehensive online presence. (This opening came just before the global pandemic would temporarily disrupt travel.)

    February 2020

  • Pandemic Response

The COVID-19 pandemic brings global travel to a standstill, but Cassidy Travel remains resilient. The company keeps its offices and phone lines open to assist customers with repatriation flights, rebookings, and refunds during the crisis. Customers later praise Cassidy Travel’s support – for example, swiftly obtaining refunds for canceled trips and providing “amazing” service during the turmoil. This period reinforces Cassidy Travel’s commitment to customer care even in industry-wide crisis.

    2020

  • Innovation and New Leadership

Amid recovery from the pandemic, Cassidy Travel makes major technology investments to enhance service. It upgrades to a new “VIBE” online booking engine (a €200,000 investment) and installs advanced phone systems that recognize customers by their caller ID and pull up their bookings automatically – a notable customer-service innovation. In mid-2021, the company appoints Sharon Harney as General Manager, the first time day-to-day operations are handed to a non-founder executive. (Harney, a travel industry veteran, had been Cassidy’s Product & Distribution Manager and was promoted to help modernize the business, while founders John Cassidy and John Spollen remain actively involved.) Cassidy Travel’s performance also earns it “Ireland’s Leading Online Travel Agency 2021” at the World Travel Awards, highlighting its robust online platform. Additionally, after a pause in 2020, Cassidy Travel resumes its winning streak at the Travel Weekly Agent Achievement Awards, being honored as Ireland’s best travel agency for 2021.

    2021

  • Awards & Recovery

Cassidy Travel bounces back strongly as travel demand returns. The agency is once again voted Ireland’s Favourite Travel Agent by customers (for the second year running) and also retains the Travel Weekly Agent Achievement Award (Ireland) for 2022. Meanwhile, Cassidy’s luxury arm Classic Resorts – by now “over 25 years” in operation – gains international notice with a nomination for the 2022 World Luxury Travel Awards. These recognitions attest to the company’s enduring quality of service and its adaptation to post-pandemic travel needs.

    2022

  • Continued Industry Leadership

Cassidy Travel wins the Travel Weekly Agent Achievement Award (Ireland) for the fourth consecutive time (2019, 2021, 2022, 2023). At a gala in London, Cassidy Travel is celebrated as Ireland’s top agency once again, with management crediting the “hard work and professionalism” of the entire team. By 2023 the company employs over 140 travel advisors across its 10 Dublin shops and online teams, maintaining its status as Ireland’s largest travel agent. For the third year in a row, Cassidy is also voted Ireland’s Favourite Travel Agent by the public in 2023, reflecting high customer satisfaction.
