The White Gold Adventure in the Salt Mines - Half-Day Tour

Journey deep into the heart of the Austrian Alps, where ancient tunnels and underground lakes reveal the rich history of salt — the "white gold" that built empires and shaped civilizations.    

Join us for an unforgettable journey! Meet our team at 9am at Mirabellplatz 2 in Salzburg’s city center. At 9:15am, hop on our comfortable shuttle for a scenic ride to the Hallein salt mines.

Upon arrival at the salt mines, you will be greeted directly by a guide who will lead you to the entrance. Your ticket includes a guided tour starting around 10:10am. Travel back 2,600 years through ancient tunnels, ride the original mine train, slide down thrilling wooden miner’s slides, and even float on an underground lake.

Dress warmly — the mine stays at a crisp 50°F (10°C). We’ll provide a traditional white miner’s suit to keep you comfy and clean. After the tour, stop by the Salzwelten shop for unique salt-themed souvenirs.

We’ll depart from the Salzwelten at 12:15pm and return to Salzburg Mirabellplatz by 1pm, leaving you with memories of an epic journey into the heart of history.

The White Gold of History

Salt’s story stretches back billions of years, shaping landscapes and civilizations alike. Around 250 million years ago, a vast salt lake covered what’s now Austria and Germany. Over time, the water evaporated, leaving behind rich salt deposits that tectonic forces later pushed up into the Alps — a process still happening today.

Humans discovered salt’s power early on. By 4,000 BC, people were preserving food with it. The Celts in Dürrnberg began mining salt by the 6th century BC, building a thriving community. By the Middle Ages, Salzburg’s Prince-Archbishops recognized salt as a major source of wealth, funding the city’s grand architecture. Today, you can step into this history at Salzwelten Salzburg — home to the world’s oldest visitor mine.
