Home to the world’s most famous theme parks

Welcome to Orlando, a city where the promise of good times and great adventures is as constant as the Florida sunshine. According to the official Visit Orlando website, it would take 121 days to fully experience everything there is to do in Orlando. That's one long vacation. Unfortunately, most Irish holidaymakers don't have that much free time on their hands, that's why Cassidy Travel helps you choose the Orlando holiday that's right for you.

For Irish holidaymakers, Orlando is  more than just a holiday destination; it’s the ultimate escape into a world where imagination rules, and every day is a play day.

And with direct flights from Ireland landing you right in the heart of it all, you can swap the familiar drizzle back home for blue skies and endless possibilities in one easy step. By its very nature, Orlando is a universe designed to lift your spirits and free your imagination the moment you step off the plane.

Family holidays in Orlando are the undisputed champion of memory-making. It’s where every child’s eyes (and parent's eyes too) light up when they meet Mickey and Minnie Mouse and a cast of hundreds we've known and loved since early childhood. It's a magical destination where wand-choosing at The Wizarding World of Harry Potter feels completely real, and where splash-downs on epic water slides create the kind of mayhem all families will love.

The beauty lies in the variety of activities that you can choose day after day. One day you’re conquering roller coasters, the next you’re exploring real rockets at the Kennedy Space Center or spotting crocodiles and alligators in the nearby Gatorland.

An all-inclusive stay or a spacious villa with a private pool isn’t just a luxury here; it’s your essential retreat and headquarters for recharging between each and every adventure. These accommodations provide the flexibility and space families need, turning downtime into its own special part of the holiday. If you want to know more about accommodation choices, just ask the Orlando experts at Cassidy Travel, they'll be more than happy to help.

But let’s not forget the couples and groups of friends. Beyond the Disney characters, the high octane rides and shows, the wonders of Universal Studios, or the splashes of Seaworld, Orlando also has a surprisingly sophisticated side. Think romantic dinners under the stars at Disney Springs, sophisticated cocktail lounges at Universal CityWalk, or a unforgettable day together floating slowly down a lazy river at one of the many luxury resorts.

For friends, it’s about sharing the adrenaline rush of next-generation roller coasters, teeing off on championship golf courses, or being pampered on a world-class spa day. For a complete change of scenery, a short drive unveils the beautiful, serene beaches of the Gulf Coast, perfect for a day of pure relaxation away from the non-stop excitement and bustle of the vast theme parks.

The real key to discovering Orlando’s magic is by doing a little bit of smart planning in advance; that way, you won't miss a single minute of your precious holiday. Another way to make the most of your time is by booking your theme park tickets and dining reservations well in advance - not only does it save you time, but it can save you money too.

You might want to consider the incredible value of a full package that bundles your park tickets with your accommodation, simplifying everything into one neat plan that lets you focus entirely on the fun.

Theme parks might be the headline act in Orlando, but don’t miss the incredible supporting cast; an adrenaline-fuelled airboat ride through the wild Everglades, a day of retail therapy at the huge designer outlet malls, or a quiet evening watching the sunset with a cocktail in hand.

Orlando is a place designed for shared memories, fits of real belly laughter, and leaving the ordinary world behind. It’s the feeling of warm sun on your shoulders as you plan your next magical moment.

Orlando Travel Tips & Insights

Everything you need to know about Orlando.

Orlando is a unique destination with so much to do, and a place where world-famous fantasy adventures and genuine Florida charm blend seamlessly under blue skies and a warming sun. For Irish holidaymakers, its lure comes in many forms; the straightforward, direct flights, the guaranteed sunshine that feels like a true escape, and the sheer variety of thrilling and unforgettable experiences packed into one neat parcel.

For Families, Orlando is the holy grail of fun adventures that bring fantasy to life. It’s where the dream of meeting a Disney Princess or casting a spell in the world of Harry Potter world become a reality.

Beyond the characters, it’s about shared laughter on splash-tastic water rides, the awe of watching a rocket on the launch-pad at the Kennedy Space Center, and the simple joy of a family dinner with fireworks lighting up the sky. The key for families is choosing the right base - that might include a resort with a kids' club, and easy transport to get you to and from the parks. The experts at Cassidy Travel will be more than happy to help you choose the accommodation that's just right for you and your family.

Couples will discover that Orlando also has a surprisingly romantic heart. Choose from sophisticated dining and live entertainment at Disney Springs, the peaceful bliss of a couples’ massage at a luxury resort spa, or the magic of watching the Epcot fireworks reflected in the World Showcase Lagoon.

Why not enjoy the thrill of the parks during the day, then retreat to an adults-only pool or a sleek cocktail bar to end the day in perfect surroundings. For a day trip away from the parks and the thrills, the silent beauty of the natural springs or a trip to the Gulf Coast beaches offer a totally amazing contrast.

For Groups of Friends, Orlando is about shared adrenaline and unforgettable moments. It’s a bucket-list destination for roller coaster enthusiasts tackling the world’s most advanced and thrilling rides, for movie buffs living out their film fantasies, and for food lovers exploring incredible themed restaurants that seem to be everywhere. The energy of Universal CityWalk at night, with its vibrant bars and clubs, provides the perfect finale to an action-packed day.

And let’s not forget the Golfers who will find a paradise of immaculate, lush green, championship courses designed by the sport’s greatest names, offering both a challenging and picturesque escape on the fairways.

But there are a few things that you really need to know before you go. Booking major theme park tickets and popular dining reservations months in advance is a must for the best experience and to make the most of your precious time.

Consider the value and convenience of a package holiday that bundles flights, accommodation, and park tickets - it simplifies budgeting and guarantees your place on the most popular rides, and not in the queues.

While the parks are the main draw, adding a day to experience the natural springs, airboat adventures, or a beach trip provides a perfect, relaxing balance. Orlando is always ready to deliver whatever kind of magic you’re looking for.

Orlando Overview

The real sparkle of Orlando really lies in the sheer depth of thrilling things to do and unmissable sights to see.

Sure, the theme parks are the city's crown jewels, but the region is bursting with a whole lot more. Your Orlando holiday can be an explosive mix of world-famous icons, authentic Florida wildlife and nature, cultural gems and historic treats, and as many relaxing diversions as you'll ever want, all under that glorious, spirit-lifting sun.

For the ultimate must-dos, you’re probably here to experience the parks. But remember, strategy is key.

At Walt Disney World, embrace Genie+ (a paid app that lets Walt Disney World guests book access to the shorter Lightning Lane queues). Make advance dining reservations for the headliners, like Star Wars - Rise of the Resistance - or secure your place at a castle dinner with a princesses (if you don't already have one with you).

In the theme parks, don't just rush between rides, savour the details; like the street performers in the World Showcase, or the animal trails in Animal Kingdom. At Universal, the Park-to-Park ticket is essential for riding the Hogwarts Express between the two Wizarding Worlds. Thrill-seekers can brave the break-neck speeds of the VelociCoaster, while movie fans can step into the world of The Bourne Stuntacular or Jurassic Park. Over at SeaWorld, the focus shifts to family-friendly orca presentations and intense roller coasters like Mako (the park's tallest, fastest, and longest coaster, reaching 200 feet high and speeds of 73 mph).

But step beyond the turnstiles, and Orlando opens up to a totally different experience.

For a taste of natural Florida, head to Wekiwa Springs for a refreshing swim in crystal-clear 72-degree waters, or rent a kayak to paddle down the lush Wekiva River. An exhilarating airboat tour through the grassy marshes of the Everglades to spot alligators and eagles (and boa constrictors) is a must-do and an totally unforgettable adventure.

For a more structured wildlife encounter, Gatorland offers visitors the chance to go zip-lining above the breeding marshes - where alligators live in their hundreds, if not thousands. Plus, be sure to check out the Stompin' Gator Off-Road Adventure, where visitors get to experience never-before-seen parts of the park in monster-style off-road trucks.

After all that excitement, culture and relaxation have their place in Orlando too. Stroll the charming, brick-lined streets of Winter Park, enjoy a scenic boat tour on its chain of lakes, and browse upscale boutiques and the fantastic Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art.

For shopaholics, the Vineland Oaks and Orlando International Premium Outlet Malls offer serious retail therapy with major savings on hundreds of designer brands. And, golfers are spoilt for choice on dozens of immaculate, championship courses designed by legends like Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus.

When the sun goes down, Orlando evenings offer their own adventure. Disney Springs and Universal CityWalk are buzzing hubs for dinner, live music, and a no-holds-barred atmosphere, and the real beauty is that there's no park ticket needed. For a uniquely Orlando evening, book a dinner show like the medieval jousting at Medieval Times, the acrobatic feasts at Makai Supper Club, or the live music events at a House of Blues concert.

A special note for Irish visitors: the Kennedy Space Center is an unmissable and profoundly impressive day trip. It’s not every holiday you get the chance to touch a moon rock, stand beneath a real Saturn V rocket, or even witness a live launch. The sense of wonder here appeals to all ages.

And remember, the amazing Florida’s beaches are within a 90-minute drive away. You can choose from the pristine sands of Clearwater or the more laid-back Cocoa Beach, both of which make for a perfect day of relaxation after an overdose of theme park frenzy.

The key to enjoying it all is balance and smart planning. Blend a day of park thrills with a morning by your hotel pool or an afternoon exploring the city's highlights. You might even want to consider a fly-drive package for the freedom to explore the wider attractions.

Orlando rewards those who look beyond the obvious, offering a richly varied holiday where every day can tell a completely different and memorable story.

Orlando Things to Do & Attractions

Orlando's nightlife shines far beyond the park fireworks. As the sun sets, the city reveals a vibrant scene of sophisticated rooftop lounges, pulsing clubs, rustic taverns, and legendary dinner shows.

Whether you're looking for craft cocktails, live music, or late-night dancing, here's a short list of suggestions. And be sure to ask the locals about the nightspots, bars, clubs and live music venues that they might recommend (but a word of light-hearted advice, if you're from Ireland, don't ask them where you'll find the best craic in town).

  • The Treehouse - This is a laid-back, multi-level 'house party' bar in Dr. Phillips with rustic decor, great drinks, and a perfect people-watching balcony.
  • Mako at SeaWorld - Sophisticated and nautically-themed; a cocktail lounge with polished decor, creative drinks, and a quieter, adult atmosphere.
  • Hannah’s Restaurant & Lounge - A retro-style piano lounge in Winter Park that features live jazz, classic cocktails, in a sleek, intimate, upscale setting.
  • The Wine Room on Park Ave - This cool self-service enoteca in Winter Park offers hundreds of wines by the pour, perfect for a casual evening of wine exploring.
  • Aero Rooftop Bar - The Wave Hotel's famous open-air rooftop bar offers unforgettable sunset views, craft cocktails, and a trendy sociable vibe.
  • ICEBAR Orlando - Ice, ice, and more ice - a unique, frozen experience where everything is made of ice, complete with thermal cloaks and great chilled cocktails.
  • The Lucky Lure - A nautical-themed craft beer and cocktail bar in Ivanhoe Village with a trendy large patio and delicious bar food.
  • Cowboy's Saloon Orlando - Yee-Haw! This is a massive, authentic country and western bar with live music, line dancing lessons, and an outdoor area for bull riding.
  • The Courtesy Bar - An intimate, award-winning craft cocktail bar downtown, known for its expert mixologists and a refined, speakeasy-like atmosphere.
  • House of Blues Orlando - The House of Blues is a legendary venue at Disney Springs for major live concerts. It also offers a great Sunday gospel brunch.
  • Roxx Tavern - Party on in this high-energy, industrial-chic tavern at Universal's CityWalk, featuring live music, pool tables, and a huge range of beers.
  • The Whiskey - A vast downtown Orlando venue with a huge selection of whiskeys, live music, multiple bars, and a large, always buzzing outdoor patio.
  • B.B. King's Blues Club - Soulful live blues, Southern cuisine at its best, and classic cocktails, all served with a side order of live music in this cool sit-down venue.
  • Chill Restaurant & Lounge - A sleek, modern spot in International Drive with a vibrant nightclub atmosphere, bottle service, and DJs spinning the best music.
  • The Cloak & Blaster - What's a 'nerd' tavern? Apparently this is, offering craft beers, board games, and themed cocktails in a community-focused setting.
  • Kitty O'Shea's Irish Pub (Orlando) - A friendly and traditional Irish pub that comes with live music, a great selection of beers, and classic pub food.
  • Fiddler's Green Irish Pub & Eatery - You'll come for the pints and stay for the welcome. A family-run Irish pub with live trad' sessions, sports on TV, and a great atmosphere.
  • SAVOY - An elegant, upscale nightclub in the Warehouse District with top DJs, a chic dress code, and an exclusive bottle-service party vibe.
  • The Boheme Restaurant & Bar - Dress up for this artistic hotel lounge downtown with live jazz, stunning décor, and an award-winning cocktail menu.
  • Mako at SeaWorld - Chill out in this nautically-themed cocktail lounge with highly polished decor, creative drinks, and a quieter adult atmosphere.
Orlando Popular Nightspots

If you really want to get to know the real Florida, be prepared to venture beyond the park gates and into its sun-drenched and quirky beating heart. The local culture is a unique blend of Southern charm, a subtropical pace of life, and a pioneering spirit born from orange groves, cattle ranches, and space exploration.

The most authentic Florida moments will come from opening your heart to the slower, more genuine lifestyle that lies behind the blitz and thrills of the main tourist attractions.

Let's start with the food. This is the land of the 'Old Florida' fish camp, where you feast on just-caught fried gator tail and hushpuppies at rustic picnic tables overlooking a still lake. It’s the sweet, tangy perfection of a proper key lime pie (the authentic version is pale yellow, never green) and the community vibe of a Saturday farmers' market piled high with ruby-red strawberries and giant avocados.

For a true local tradition, join the queue at a no-frills barbecue shack for slow-smoked pork or find a Cuban cafeteria in Orlando’s Mills 50 district for a legendary medianoche sandwich and a cafecito.

The State's cultural fabric is woven from its surrounding environment and local history. You feel it in how the locals show their respect for the mighty Everglades - the 'River of Grass' that defines the region's natural ecosystem.

You also see it, and feel it, in the surviving historic citrus groves and in the mid-century Googie architecture (made popular in the 50s and 60s) along classic highways that jump from the pages of history.

For a real authentic local experience, trade a park day for adventures that connect you to the local heritage. Paddle a kayak through a crystal-clear spring, like Rock Springs Run, where manatees might glide beneath your boat in the cooler months, or feel the dusty excitement of a real rodeo in Kissimmee, the heart of Florida's cowboy country. Or, tour a family-run citrus grove to taste sun-warmed fruit straight from the tree, and for a moment of profound community awe, catch a live rocket launch from the nearby Space Coast.

To see the local creative spirit, stroll the artistic enclaves of Ivanhoe Village or Audubon Park, where independent galleries and boutiques have sprouted in a laid-back, leafy setting.

This is the Florida that locals adore - a welcoming, layered, and beautifully relaxed opposite to the themed wonderlands and magic worlds. Making these experiences part of your holiday doesn’t just show you Orlando's buzzing exterior, it lets you feel the real, sun-warmed soul of the Sunshine State and the people who call it home.

Orlando Food, Culture, & Experience

A little smart planning is the key to a stress-free Orlando holiday. As an Irish passport holder, your first essential step is travel authorization for entry to the US. You’ll need to apply online for an ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) under the Visa Waiver Program well before you travel - it’s valid for two years and is mandatory to have. Just don’t leave it to the last minute.

If you have an emergency situation once you're in the US, or come across and emergency situation, the number to dial is 911. Additionally, comprehensive travel insurance is a must have, but make sure it covers medical expenses, emergency evacuations, and potential trip interruptions.

When it comes to safety, Orlando is generally very safe, but, like all major cities, you should practise standard vigilance with your personal possessions in crowded areas. The sun is another major concern in Orlando; be sure to have, and use, a high-factor sunscreen, wear a hat whenever you're outside, and stay hydrated at all times.

If you can, use a credit card with no foreign transaction fees for the bulk of your purchases. But, be sure to notify your bank of your travel plans - you really don't want your card getting cancelled while you're on holiday. While cards are accepted almost everywhere, carry some small US dollar bills for tipping - this is a key part of the American culture. Expect to tip between 15-20% in sit-down restaurants, $1-2 per bag for porters, and $3-5 per day for housekeeping workers.

And here's something you really have to know. Most hotels add a daily resort fee (it can be as much as $20-$50 per day, and is usually charged at the end of your stay). That can be a nasty surprise if you haven't included it in your budget. And one more thing you should know; if you decide to hire a car you should be aware that theme park and hotel parking is extremely pricey - make sure to factor these into your budget.

Packing smart is all about comfort and climate. Orlando’s weather is hot and humid with frequent short, heavy afternoon showers. Pack light, breathable clothing, a lightweight rain jacket or poncho, and a swimsuit for every member of the family. The single most important item is a pair of broken-in, comfortable walking shoes - whether you like it or not, you’ll be clocking in some serious miles. And, don't forget to pack a portable phone charger, a refillable water bottle - the collapsible ones take up less space in your luggage - and European-to-US plug adapters.

And here are some extra key pieces of advice that will help you enjoy your Orlando getaway even more.

Avoid over-scheduling. Trying to do multiple major parks on consecutive days leads to exhaustion and can even ruin your holiday. Be sure to allow for resort or pool days to recharge your batteries. Next, renting a car is highly recommended for flexibility, especially for visiting springs, beaches, or the Space Center. While Disney transport is excellent, having your own vehicle opens up the real Florida. And last, but not least, as we've already said many times, book everything in advance. This includes not just flights and hotels, but also theme park tickets, popular dining reservations (allow at least 60 days out for Disney), and special experiences. Spontaneity is great, and highly recommended, but the best restaurant tables and access to the best park rides sell out months in advance

By being aware of these basics, your paving the way for a hassle-free adventure where the only surprises are great ones.

Orlando: FAQs & Tips

Quick answers to help you plan your trip.

For one thing, you can forget the woolly jumpers and start thinking light layers. Orlando is hot and humid for most of the year, with sudden, heavy afternoon showers, especially in summer. Don't forget to pack comfortable walking shoes (you’ll thank us later), breathable clothes, a swimsuit, a sun hat, and a light rain poncho. Even in winter, evenings can be cool, so one light jacket is a good idea.

For the most comfortable weather - unless of course you like sweltering heat - the best months to visit are from March to May and mid-September to mid-November. During these times you can expect the weather to be warm, but with manageable temperatures between 24°C - 30°C - and with less crowds. In winter (December, January, February), Orlando's climate is mild and pleasant with average high temperatures of around 20°C - 23°C, with occasional lows of between 10°C - 15°C.

That's a good question, with no easy answer. If you like the idea of pre-paying for meals and snacks to avoid worrying about the bills, and your kids insist on doing lots of character dining, then yes, it can offer good value in the long run. Kids (aged 3-9) eat free if you book as part of a Walt Disney World package plan. But, probably the best bet is to ask your travel agent when booking your Orlando holiday, they're sure to have all the information you'll need.

First thing you need to know is that there are a lot of ways to spend your money in Orlando, and there are a lot of businesses willing to take it. If you're travelling with kids, it can get even more expensive - another Mickey Mouse shaped snack anyone?

But seriously, a good mid-range estimate is about $50-$75 per adult per day, and that's just for food if you plan on doing one nice sit-down meal, along with counter service snacking throughout the day. And, don't forget to budget for tips (15-20% for sit-down meals). Nobody wants to be stingy on holiday, but it's a good idea to have a chat with the kids (and yourself) and set a daily limit for your spending.

A magic wand would be nice, but the real magic is to go at their pace. Start early, take a long afternoon break at the hotel pool (this is crucial), and return in the evening. Bring a stroller even for older kids - the parks are way bigger than you imagine.

Book Disney World character meals - you've got a lot to choose from; Chef Mickey's, Cinderella's Royal Table, Tusker House with Donald and friends, and lots more - they’re air-conditioned, you get great interaction, and everyone sits down to relax for a while. Another child-friendly piece of advice is; don’t try to do everything - pick two or three must-dos per day and leave it at that, no matter how much you might get distracted.

You can do both, but for total freedom to explore the real Florida outside the theme parks (springs, beaches, the Space Center), a rental car is unbeatable. Hotel shuttles to the parks are usually free but they can be infrequent and are often crowded.

If you’re only doing Disney and staying on-site, they have an excellent transport system that might suit you for all your needs. But, for a mixed holiday, parks and surrounding areas, we highly recommend renting a car. Just be warned, the car parking fees can be pretty high in resorts, parks, and hotels.

Simple answer, yes, you do need to book months in advance. For the most popular character dining and signature restaurants inside Disney and Universal - absolutely yes. The online window for booking usually opens up about 60 days in advance (at least for Disney), and as soon as it opens you should book straight away.

However, for lots of other nice restaurants, a few weeks ahead is safe. For casual spots, a day or two is usually fine, but always try to check in advance.

First up, don’t panic. Every park has a first-aid centre where you can be treated for simple ailments or referred to a hospital for other treatments. But as everyone knows, being sick in the US is not cheap, this is why having comprehensive travel insurance is absolutely essential - and make sure it covers medical evacuation if necessary. Think of it this way, travel insurance is the one thing you buy and hope you never have to use.

For minor issues like headaches, blisters, sunburn, etc., CVS and Walgreens pharmacies are almost everywhere. For more serious emergencies, dial 911.

That really is the golden question. However, the best times to visit Orlando are late January through early February and the full months of May and September. At these times you're dodging the major US school holidays.

Plus, and it's a big plus, the weather in May and September is absolutely perfect; warm but not with the intense heat of the peak-summer season. September has the added perk of Halloween festivities starting, but do keep an eye on the hurricane season forecast. If you can manage it, these windows give you shorter lines and slightly better deals.

We hear you, and we know it can all add up very fast. The biggest secret is planning way ahead. Sounds simple right? But it's true, flight and hotel prices only go up. Consider a package holiday that bundles your flight, hotel, and tickets; travel agencies often have access to deals you won't find online.

Small things like bringing your own sunscreen, ponchos, and snacks into the parks can also help you save money. Also, look beyond the parks for meals; some of the best food is at local, family-run spots and will cost you at least half the price of a meal in the parks. And finally, beware the souvenir traps - maybe set a fun budget for the kids beforehand - turn spending into a game.

We totally get this one! The real trick is to sell them the next-level experiences. Universal is your best friend here - the intensity of the VelociCoaster, the immersive tech of Harry Potter and The Bourne Stuntacular will blow them away. Book an after-hours event like a Halloween Horror Night for serious teen credibility.

Beyond the parks, promise them real adventure; an airboat ride speeding through the Everglades, indoor skydiving at iFLY, or a thrilling evening at Andretti Indoor Karting. Let them plan one full day for themselves - you could be surprised at the awesome, even edgier Orlando that they'll manage to find. In this case, a little autonomy can go a long, long way.
